Since the topic is astronomy pet peeves, these technically aren't even crescent moons. The terminator line (the line separating the light side from the dark side on a body in space source would be going from the top of the moon to the bottom if it were a crescent moon, or any other phase excluding the new moon and full moon. The picture technically shows a full moon going into the Earth's shadow as seen in this image, which would result in either a partial or total lunar eclipse.

That's helpful to know, but I think this requires a greater understand of astronomy rather than understanding planet facts that you learn in junior/primary school.

Is the shadow on the moon different depending on where you are in the world? If you're near the north, it'd be upside down compared to being in the south, right?

Oh wow that makes it much simpler. One question though. Is every new moon a full lunar eclipse? If not, why is the moon not reflecting any light?

I live in Russia and the crescent moon here is nearly vertical, but when I go to, say, Egypt, it is nearly horizontal — which explains the way crescents look on arabian mosques. It was my understanding (entirely based on this empirical data, I never looked it up) that the angle of the terminator depends on the latitude. Is it wrong?

I did something similar one time. I had to draw or paint something in art class in elementary school and I put a cloud behind the sun. Wasn't the brightest thing to do

That's pretty funny, it's like the opposite of the stars in front of the moon.

The sun can be bright enough to shine through thin clouds, so maybe you weren't as dumb as you thought.

I've seen them a lot, and I imagine anyone on tumblr or any other art site like deviantart would probably see plenty of bad moons.

It's just like one of those tropes of bad drawing, like children drawing the sky as a blue box at the top of the paper and the ground as a green box at the bottom.

Search for "crescent moon" or "moon drawing". I found several pages with stars inside the shadowy part of the moon.

If you watch a lot of anime you'll see it all the time. I actually specifically keep an eye out for it now.

There's also no face on the moon and there no little boy fishing from it into a pond, turning it into the Dreamworks logo. I'm not trying to say these bad drawings are good works of art, but scientific accuracy has never been required.

As for that comment, I hope that person who thinks he/she is a kitten is as young as that understanding sounds.
